Cereal box Advent Calendar | @Sydney.Piercey

This week using a cereal box, I made an advent calendar for both my children. I am very excited to share it with you today.

I love making my own decorations with and for my children, and especially for special occasions like birthdays and Christmas.

Last year, using my daughter’s footprints on recycled card, we made decorations for the tree, which we will add to with updated footprints this year, growing our collection year on year.

This year, I decided to make something for them as well, and had an idea for an advent calendar using a cereal box. The advent calendar’s theme is a Christmas house, with each window containing the gift.

Here’s how I did it if you want to make your own. It could be a lovely craft to make with older children too.

What you will need:

Cereal box

Scrap cardboard (optional)

Brown paper or wrapping paper

Glue stick and/ or tape

Colouring pens/ pencils to decorate

Scissors

Treats or notes for filling

Method:

  1. Turn your cereal box inside out by cutting a slit down one side so as to make a flat sheet of cardboard, and rebuilding the box, securing with tape.

  2. Make 24 calendar windows from your brown paper or wrapping paper. I did this by cutting a square of paper, folding the bottom half up a quarter of the way upwards and folding in both the left and right sides to meet in the middle.

  3. Affix your windows to the box with glue (on the back side with folds). I glued 9 to each wide side of the box, and 3 to each slimmer slide.

  4. Decorate your windows and number them. I made the roof by folding a scrap of cardboard in half and taping to the top of the box (trimming it to fit).

  5. Fill with treats! I bought a big bar of chocolate which I separated into chunks and individually wrapped in baking paper!
